Andrew Allen - Writing Showcase 005 - Short DnD Background Setup
Hi all!
Here is my short initial background piece of writing for a DnD campaign that I ran a couple of years ago. I tried to set the tone and history of the story that would unfold in as little words as possible, whilst still trying to get enough detail across to keep the players intrigued and interested in wanting to know more. Anyhoo, enjoy!
It all began 5,000 years ago…
With rivalries building between territory of the realm, the forces of men and the forces of elves would begin what was now known as ‘the War of Lies – the 2,000 year war’. The forces of men, underestimating the power of the Elves, ventured north in search of guidance and aid from the undermen – the dwarves.
Advancing onto the battlefield, gleaming in his polished black armour, Lord Commander and High King of the Realm Volthar BlackMoore led his men into the unknown, uncertain of victory or defeat. Only when the Forces of Men had almost been defeated were their prayers finally answered.
Heading a warband of 100,000 undermen, Gunthar Whitebeard thundered onto the battlefield like an iron anvil, piercing the forces of the Elves. It was utter devastation, men had prevailed, and the elves had been defeated. The celebrations that followed lasted for centuries, but all was not as it seemed…
King of the elves, Elemar Valander had survived, and, casting all traditions aside, swore a new loyalty. A loyalty most foul, and one that has remained hidden for thousands of years.
Today, the realm is still basking in a time of peace. Since the war, the undermen in the north have remained there, overshadowed by the Jade Mountains, gleaming with a greenish tint. Few venture to and from there, and if they do, it is usually because they have been cast out, or on official business.
The harbour town of Phelnor to the west bustles with the sounds of trade, and men seeking coin and the finer spoils in life.
The desert lands of Arashii to the east are as beautiful yet deadly as ever, hiding secrets that people only hear about in nightmares.
And so to the here and now, where darkness is building. Strange whispers have been heard on the wind, of mad men, and talks of dragons..
Our story begins, with an Inn, in a quaint little town in the middle of nowhere…
